Economical Hydraulic Diaphragm Pumps
The Series 500-E “dia-PUMP” from Neptune Chemical Pump Co. offers
all the performance advantages of a true hydraulic diaphragm pump.
Economy is achieved by using a simplified liquid end for low- to medium-viscosity fluids such as disinfection chemicals and acids.
Nine models offer maximum capacities from 0.8 gph to 30 gph. All models feature micrometer dial which allows manual adjustment over 10:1
turndown range. Maximum pressures to 1100 psi. Automatic control
options include pneumatic or electric stroke length adjustment and variable speed drives.
Cast Iron, 316SS, PVC and Kynar liquid ends are available.

Corporate Environmental
Management by John Darabaris
(CRC Press, 2008, 206 pp.,
ISBN 978-1-4200-5546-7) (Hardcover)
Corporate Environmental Management by John Darabaris, a professional engineer (PE)
and non-practicing certified public accountant (CPA),
focuses on “the emerging relationship between corporate management and the environment as a new era
arrives on the scene, where environmental factors
increasingly play a key role in corporate competition
and generate a need for environmental assessments
of companies” (p. 1).
Corporate Environmental Management chapters
include: 1) Introduction, 2) Environmental
Management Assessment, 3) Lines of Inquiry,
4) Assessment Model and Analytical Framework,
5) Internal Survey, 6) Corporate Commitment,
7) Communication, 8) Functional Implementation,
9) Measurement Systems, 10) Benchmark Survey,
11) External Survey, 12) Natural Resources Damage Assessment—Proactive Strategies,
13) Environmental Risk Assessment Issues, 14) Emergency Response Analysis,
15) Corporate Health and Safety System, 16) Environmental Risk Management at
Banking Institutions, 17) Global Warming, 18) Assessment of International Trends, and
19) Summary. Ample references are provided throughout the text. Corporate
Environmental Management is replete with “exhibits”—descriptive figures, tables, and
charts. With help from the exhibits, a lot of very practical guidance is packed into only
about 200 pages divided among its 19 chapters.
As can be seen by the chapter titles, contemporary “hot button” topics are certainly
addressed, like corporate commitment, communication, environmental risk assessment,
emergency response, and even global warming. Examples of the book’s coverage of
topics important to today’s environmental professionals include: Chapter 7 on communication, although succinct, covers the essential concepts of effective internal and
external relations; Chapter 13 on environmental risk assessment issues deals with health
and ecological risk assessments, along with population risk analysis; and, Chapter 18
that looks at international trends including a short section on emerging environmental
issues in China and India.
The longest chapter in the book, Chapter 9, explores the critical subject of measurement systems. The first exhibit in that chapter displays a handy metrics development
wheel. Further text and exhibits in the chapter review environmental management information system elements, assessment management, and financial management. An
extended discussion of this last item considers conventional commercial loans, supplier
financing, environmental capital equipment leasing, and other possible sources of
funds.
In the final, summary chapter of Corporate Environmental Management, Mr. Darabaris
states:
“a culture must be fostered wherein [Environmental Health & Safety] is recog
nized as good for sustainable business. Environmental management is a
venue that requires not only aggressive access to policy-setters and regulators
but concrete efforts to improve relations with external stakeholders. In time,
strong environmental management may offer increased business opportuni
ties and enhanced worker morale” (pp. 194-195).
(An aside on worker morale: As you might expect, satisfied employees working for a company that operates in a legal and ethical manner can be terrific for
building and sustaining not only protective environmental practices but
good community relations as well.)
Both the wide breadth and sufficient depth of coverage found in Corporate
Environmental Management make it a good introductory course textbook for academic, training, and certification institutions. For example, colleges looking to introduce
undergraduate students to the wide variety of issues the modern environmental manager faces will do well to seriously consider Corporate Environmental Management for
their course textbook. Alternatively, I recommend the book as appropriate for supplemental reading or as a reference text, inside or outside the classroom.
