Rony Mejia, a Material Mover at the ITT facto- ry in Morton Grove, Illinois, has received the pres- tigious Harold S. Geneen Award for his efforts in making extraordinary improvements in peoples' lives. The Geneen Award is the highest corporate recognition provided to employees at ITT. Mejia was recognized for creating and implementing a variety of innovative social out-reach programs that are making a positive difference for people and entire communities in his native country of Guatemala. Over the last several years, he has formed and led a number of volunteer organizations that provided an ambulance, fire-fighting equip- ment, hearing aids, medical and school supplies, furniture, clothes, monetary donations and other critical services to underprivileged sections of this Latin American country.
Thermo Fisher Scientific has been granted two U.S. patents for Radiation Instruments that can help lower risk of nuclear terrorism. Thermo Scientific RadEye PRD helps border guards, customs agents or counterterrorism teams detect radiation sources more effectively than conventional personal detec- tors U.S. patent 7,456,405 B1 was granted for the radiation-measuring Thermo Scientific RadEye PRD, a small, portable, high-sensitivity, pager-like device. Unlike conventional radiation pagers, the patented method incorporated in the RadEye PRD allows the setting of alarm levels well below the typical range of natural background radiation. U.S. patent 7,544,927 B1 was granted for the innovative Thermo Scientific Lutetium-Oxide test adapter for beta and gamma sensitive radiation detectors. Based on specially shaped packaging of high-densi- ty Lutetium-Oxide ceramics, the patented test adapter overcomes the many disadvantages of con- ventional radiation check sources.
Herman Benecke, one of Battelle's scientists, has been chosen to receive the 2010 Industrial Uses of Soybean Oil Award by the American Oil Chemists' Society. Benecke, who specializes in the conversion of soy- bean oil and meal for various industrial products, will be given the award May 17 at the Society's annual meeting in Phoenix. The award is presented by the Society's Industrial Oil Products Division and is sponsored by the United Soybean Board.
Since coming to Battelle in 1980, Benecke has been awarded 14 patents, many of which deal with the use of soybean and other vegetable oils to formu- late products varying from flexible and rigid foams to more environmentally friendly and healthier plasticizers for the manufacture of PVC flexible tubing, children's toys, vinyl flooring and other products. GE Advanced Gas Turbine Technology will help East Malaysia’s largest independent power plant meet the region’s growing needs. GE announced the commissioning of the first Frame 6FA gas turbine supplied to the Ranhill Powertron II plant, which will be the largest and most efficient independent power plant in the state of Sabah, East Malaysia. The 190-megawatt, com- bined-cycle facility will provide power to support the region’s rapid growth and will support the Malaysian government’s energy strategy to promote cleaner and more efficient power generation.

Cemtrex Inc. was awarded a $1.3 million contract from the National Administration of Power Plants and Electric Transmissions of Uruguay (UTE) to design, supply, and install complete Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) for eight stacks with redundant systems for emissions report- ing and compliance. The CEMS will be installed at Jose Batlle y Ordonez Station in Montevideo, Uruguay and will measure and report emissions of SO2, CO, NO, NO2, O2 and particulate matter.
Severn Trent Services has been awarded a contract to supply their TETRA® Denite® denitrification system for use at the Baltimore City Department of Public Works’ Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tertiary treatment system will help reduce the plant’s discharge of total nitrogen (TN) by more than 80 percent and total phosphorous (TP) by more than 90 percent, significantly reduc- ing nutrients discharged to the Patapsco River and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. The Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant is undergoing upgrades and expansion over the next two years. Once com- pleted, it will be the largest installed fixed-film denitrification system in the world.
